Uncover Your Career Motivators and Find Fulfillment at Work

Have you ever wondered why certain work makes you happy and satisfied, while you feel you could never do or see yourself in another type of job? Why do some people seek routine and structured tasks, while others thrive in diverse and dynamic work environments? The secret lies in deeply rooted values that guide our career decisions. We are talking about career anchors. Each of us has a unique combination of values, abilities, and desires that shape how we approach work. Understanding your career anchor can help you choose a career aligned with your values and make decisions that lead to greater satisfaction and success.

What Are Career Anchors?

A career anchor is a concept developed by Dr. Edgar Schein. According to him, a career anchor evolves over time based on experiences, values, and desires. It acts as an internal "motor" that drives career decisions and provides stability, even when the work environment changes.

It is a deeply ingrained sense of who you are and what you need to feel fulfilled in your career. Understanding this internal compass can help align your career goals with your personal values.

The Eight Career Anchors

Dr. Edgar Schein identified eight main career anchors, each representing a different type of motivation and priority.

Technical-Functional Anchor

People with this anchor value expertise and build their careers around the content of their work or field of expertise. They enjoy deepening their knowledge in a specific domain. Their highest value is knowledge, and they appreciate opportunities for growth and learning.

Managerial Anchor

For those with this anchor, the greatest motivation lies in climbing the hierarchical ladder to the highest positions or levels of responsibility. They think strategically, enjoy leading people, making decisions, and taking responsibility for key choices.

Autonomy and Independence Anchor

Individuals with this anchor value freedom and autonomy. They want to be given their goal and the desired outcome, along with a framework for their work, but prefer to have freedom in deciding how to achieve the goal. They seek trust and independence in reaching results.

Security and Stability Anchor

For people with this anchor, stability provided by a secure work environment (organization) or permanent employment (e.g., a long-term contract) is crucial. They value tasks that are clearly defined with known procedures for achieving the goal.

Entrepreneurial Creativity Anchor

Those with this anchor are full of entrepreneurial ideas they want to bring to the market as products or services. Their primary value is ownership, and they often aspire to run their own business.

Service/Dedication to a Cause Anchor

The strongest motivation for individuals with this anchor is finding a higher purpose in their work. They need to understand who or what (e.g., the environment or people) they are working for and what the added value of their efforts is. Their work is directed toward a higher societal good or improving the lives of others.

Pure Challenge Anchor

People with this anchor enjoy diverse and dynamic work because they quickly become bored. They love competition, often with themselves, and set high goals and challenges. They constantly push their boundaries and actively seek tasks that challenge them.

Lifestyle Anchor

Individuals with this anchor value work-life balance. They appreciate organizational support that helps them harmonize their professional and private lives. Despite this, they remain dedicated and build successful careers. Their key value is free time.

How Can Understanding Career Anchors Help Us?

For individuals, a specific career anchor is driven by a core value that motivates them to perform well. Understanding which career anchors are most prominent can help you identify the type of work that suits you best and find a work environment where you can "live" your anchor. By knowing your anchors, you can make better career decisions.

In an environment that supports an individual's dominant anchors or what they find important at work, they are more motivated. This approach helps avoid burnout and unnecessary stress. Personal responsibility lies in discovering what matters most to you at work and what motivates you, as this leads to greater satisfaction and success.

How to Identify Your Career Anchor?

Identifying your career anchor can be a process that involves self-reflection and analyzing your past decisions. Consider the following:

  • What types of tasks excite you? Do you enjoy leading teams, solving challenges, or building your career around a specific field of expertise?

  • What kind of environment suits you best? Do you prefer a stable and predictable work setting or a dynamic one?

  • What values are most important to you? Is it success, knowledge, advancement, creativity, or something else?

The simplest, quickest, and most reliable way is to take a questionnaire that reveals your career anchor.
